Star Tribune November, 2015 – Present
The Star Tribune is poised for change and innovation within the walls of their (new) newsroom. I have been given the responsibility of leading our digital projects as I further explore methods of rendering storytelling in digital spaces that is visually appealing and user centered. Part of my homework is uncovering user flows and engagement in these newly introduced approaches to storytelling. Other assignments include developing more efficient processes for how my department and the larger newsroom communicates on projects, and noting ways to challenge our newsroom to test and learn from new and alternative approaches to the work we do.

San Francisco Chronicle December, 2013 – October, 2015
At the Chronicle I design web and code within their content management system. In my
designer/web producer role I have been tasked to work with each department of our newsroom
to enhance our digital approach in our highly experimental “incubator” test space. Working as lead digital designer has been a pleasure and a challenge as we “experiment and fail fast,” as my editor Audrey Cooper would say.

Asbury Park Press Design Studio February, 2012 – May, 2013
This Gannett studio is one of five “design hubs” in the U.S. and serves 15 newspapers in the northeast region. I was named “branding specialist” and have since completed March Madness 2012 and 2013, and Election 2012 branding projects. I also earned a “Gannett Award of Excellence” for visual journalism work featured in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Forum Publishing Group June, 2011-January 2012
FPG is a Tribune Co. community newspaper chain – a miniature of it’s parent paper, the Sun-Sentinel. There, I set the tone for visuals across its most viable publications, successfully pitched, designed and coded a MailChimp newsletter, and redesigned several publications a company award for bringing new ideas that improved revenues.

L.A. Watts Times January, 2009-June 2010
After learning this Los Angeles based African-American newspaper was outsourcing design, I approached them with a plan for a redesign. The paper never lived to see one, but did enjoy my work before being sold. I helped improve digital ad handling for their Magento site and developed rich advertorial solutions. I also produced a special section on the death of Michael Jackson.

ONA STUDENT PROJECT | September 25 – 27, 2014

ONA Chicago
I’ll be working with college students to produce multimedia projects and stories during the annual ONA conference in this year’s host city of Chicago.

NABJ STUDENT PROJECT | July 30 – August 3, 2014

NABJ Boston
A particularly unique experience in that I worked with both print and web desks. Coaching students on design and working with students on interactive projects was a really positive and empowering experience for both mentors and students.

YesWeCode Hackathon | July 30 – August 3, 2014

Essence Festival, New Orleans
My job was to work with students who fit into the track of design, UI/UX and front-end wed development. I performed exercises with students in branding, user flows and wireframing their apps. The considerations they were able to make based on these techniques made many of their projects better and they were very proud of their work. My team developed “Potluck” and app that connects users to fresh food options in their communities. The concept placed 3rd overall in the competition.
